New Delhi: Delhi Police on Wednesday registered an FIR over the alleged unauthorised entry of Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other INDIA bloc leaders into the Akashvani Bhawan premises during Tuesday’s protest against the Election Commission of India.

According to Delhi Police, the Opposition had planned a march from Parliament House towards Nirvachan Sadan, the Election Commission’s headquarters, but no official permission had been sought or granted for the march.

After protesters were stopped near the Election Commission office, several Opposition leaders and MPs staged a sit-in. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and other leaders then entered the Akashvani Bhawan premises and continued the protest there, police said.

Police said the protesters were asked to vacate the premises but refused, insisting that they would not leave until a delegation of MPs was allowed to meet the Election Commission officials. Officers subsequently intervened to maintain law and order, removed the protesters from the premises and detained them.

Around 260 people, including 10 MPs, were detained during Tuesday’s protest, according to police. The detained leaders were taken to the New Police Lines in Kingsway Camp and were later released.

The FIR relates to the alleged unauthorised entry into Akashvani Bhawan and the subsequent protest. Further details, including the sections invoked, were awaited.

The protest was organised by Opposition parties as part of their broader campaign against the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and their demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
